Jeanne McWilliams Blasberg — Travel Writer

Our family’s move to Zurich, Switzerland in 2009 put us in a marvelous central location from which to embark on excursions around Europe. Since our stay was supposed to be short, the clock started ticking as soon as we landed and I began planning as much travel as we could pack in.

Living abroad with an explorer’s mindset changed my approach to many things. Removed from any sense of routine, I was more present and alert than ever. I was curious and open to meeting new people, speaking foreign languages and taking impromptu exits off main roads. I was practically addicted to planning the next trip.

Upon our return to Boston in 2012, I vowed to maintain that curious spirit. I’ve travelled to Africa, Asia, and South America since my expat life came to an end, but I’ve also travelled around New England and the US with an eye toward beautiful, authentic experiences.

My desire to be a travel writer stems from my love of both. It’s not just writing about the places that interest me, it’s the transformation travel brings. I want to share my experiences and connect with the curious spirit in others.

On Minimalism: Packing or Unpacking

/
It is always easier to pack more than less. Just like it is easier to spew out a burgeoning overwrought draft than refine a work of poetry. Sitting on the floor of my bedroom with a suggested packing list, luggage weight limitations, and the need to only carry-on, the journey has…By Jeanne|

Travel Isn’t Measured in Terms of Miles

/
We anchored the boat in a protected cove. Swimming through green waters toward a crescent beach of sparkling white sand, our bodies cooled for the first time all day. We walked toward a farmhouse at the end of the beach and a lighthouse marking the opening of the cove.By Jeanne|

A Friendship Tour, Thanks to a Book

Promoting a book is almost as hard as writing one. Especially the first time, especially for an indie author without access to the big marketing machines behind books published by the big five. In anticipation of my May 2 pub date, sometime last winter, I began scheduling a book…By Jeanne|

That Man in the Greenhouse, Iceland

/
Iceland is a pretty popular travel destination these days – primarily due to a trend toward adventure and outdoor recreation, but also thanks to great airline promotions sponsored by Icelandair. I was in Iceland for ten days in early April to attend the Iceland Writer’s Retreat.…By Jeanne|
